New cell phone restrictions for Colorado drivers

Distracted driving is a real concern, and according to the American Automobile Association (AAA) over 8,000 crashes a day are caused by distracted drivers across the nation.  The use of cell phones, texting, and emailing are all factors in adding to increased traffic accidents. Because these activities cause drivers to take their minds off driving and their hands away from the wheel, there has been major concern over the future of people driving with cell phones.

Driver safety is a concern, which is why many states already have restrictions on the use of cell phones while driving.  The state of Colorado placed House Bill 1094 into law on December 1, 2009. This bill prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from using a cell phone while driving, as well as bans all drivers in Colorado from texting, emailing or twittering while driving.

If you are caught texting while driving, it is a Class A traffic offense in Colorado with a $50 ticket and subsequent offenders are ticketed $100.  

Even though Colorado is still one of the many states that allows drivers over 18 to talk on handheld cell phones while operating a vehicle, many drivers have already switched to hands-free devices for safety reasons.  There are rumors that Colorado might adopt the handheld cell phone ban for all drivers, but as of now there are no bills related to the use of handheld cell phones being introduced in the Colorado General Assembly which is in session through May 12, 2010.
