Distraction is becoming a major cause of auto and motorcycle accidents

Many of us have experienced near-crashes in Colorado due to another driver's unpredictable behavior, and the reason for that behavior often turns out to be that the driver is engaged in a lively conversation on his or her cell phone.

Numerous studies have shown that driver distraction is quickly becoming a major cause of auto, truck, and motorcycle accidents. Distractions are numerous, and they are steadily multiplying, as vehicles become more sophisticated and the average person's car is now outfitted like a living room or an office cubicle. People who should be concentrating on driving are now:

o calling, texting, receiving e-mail, or posting messages on a cell phone
o eating wraps, fumbling in a cool box, or drinking hot coffee
o looking at a GPS screen, or typing an address
o searching for music or news on the radio, selecting and changing CD's, or connecting an MP3 player
o watching videos, feeding the kids, restraining the dog, or reaching for objects on the floor
o fumbling with a laptop on the passenger seat

Distractions cause a driver to stop looking at the traffic, and take his or her hands off the wheel and mind away from the driving. It shouldn't come as a surprise that so many accidents happen that could have been avoided.

If you have been the victim of a car accident in Colorado due to a distracted driver, you are entitled to compensation. It is essential to collect as much evidence as possible immediately after the accident, especially eye witnesses' reports.

Colorado law bans texting while driving and hand-held cell phone usage for drivers under the age of 18 years old. But laws can only prohibit the most obviously dangerous behaviors. It is important that we recognize the danger of distracted driving and bring those who cause devastating accidents to justice.

At the Colorado Springs Law Offices of Robert J. Anderson, we are uniquely prepared to assist victims of car or motorcycle accidents caused by distracted driving. Call us today for a free consultation at 866-254-1274 (toll-free) or 473-3040 (local) or send us an e-mail.
