Understanding the effects of a spinal cord injury

Colorado car accidents produce injuries, and injuries can range on a scale of severity. Unfortunately, one of the most common yet also serious injuries a car crash may produce is a spinal cord injury. The reason why this type of injury is so horrific is because it has the possibility of shutting down the body’s nerve flow and leaving someone physically impaired.

The spinal cord is the major bundle of nerves which sends nerve impulses to and from the brain to the rest of the body. It is approximately 18 inches long and is located at the base of your brain and extends down your back to your waist. If it is damaged, it could cause a loss of feeling or mobility.

Typically, the higher the injury occurs in the spinal column, the more serious the injury. If the injury occurs in the neck, it is likely the victim will experience a loss of feeling in the arms and legs causing quadriplegia. If the injury is to the chest, it could result in paraplegia causing a loss of feeling in the chest and legs.

Depending upon the severity of the accident, it will determine the type of injury. There are two types of spinal cord injuries – complete and incomplete. An incomplete injury is one in which the injured person may be able to feel or move one arm or leg more than another or might feel one side or part of the body that can’t be moved. A complete injury is where both sides of the body are affected the same and no movement or feeling occurs below the level of the injury.

Spinal cord injuries in Colorado as well as paralysis can result from traffic accidents. Some of the most common ways a spinal cord injury could occur in a traffic accident includes:
SUV rollover
Tire tread separation
Suspension defects
Roof collapse
Seat back collapse
Seatbelt failure
