Safety tips to avoid a Colorado Springs motorcycle accident

Motorcycle accidents in Colorado and throughout the nation may be fatal as there is nothing protecting motorcyclists from an impact with other vehicles or the hard ground. Because there isn’t anything surrounding riders from nature’s elements, there is nothing to absorb the impact of the crash besides their own bodies. Unfortunately, motorcycle collisions and fatalities have been increasing in recent years as well as an increased interest in motorcycle riding in general.

Due to a motorcycle’s ability to rapidly accelerate, motorcycles have often been caught in passenger vehicles’ blind spots. Also, because motorcycles are smaller, other motorists have a hard time seeing the bikes or knowing they are driving next to them on to the road. The failure of other motorists to look out and avoid motorcycle drivers accounts for 70% of motorcycle accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Because motorists and motorcyclists share the road, it is a good idea both drivers become familiar with the Colorado State Patrol’s safety tips. There are good recommendations that every motorcycle driver in Colorado should practice and other motorists should adhere to in order to prevent motorcycle accidents in Colorado from occurring.

Safety Tips for Motorcycle Riders:

  • Take a motorcycle training and education course.
  • Don’t share a lane with any vehicle.
  • Don’t weave in and out of cars and try to avoid blind spots.
  • Don’t drive on the shoulder.
  • Use signal lights to indicate which lane you are changing in to.
  • Do not drink and ride your motorcycle.
  • Wear protective riding gear and a helmet.

Helpful Tips for Motorists:

  • Don’t share a lane with a motorcycle.
  • Allow the motorcycle to have its own lane and don’t follow to close.
  • Look out for motorcycles when you change lanes or before you make a turn.
  • Use signal indicators before making a turn or changing lanes.
  • If obstacles are in the road, try to predict motorcyclists’ actions in order to avoid the obstruction.

These tips for motorcycle drivers and motorists are essential to motorcyclists’ safety as Colorado motorcycle deaths have doubled in the last decade. Unfortunately, there were 87 fatalities due to motorcycle crashes in 2005, and over 76 percent of these deaths were a result of riding with no helmet in Colorado.
