Will speed governors make truck accidents in Colorado less frequent?

Many of us often drive next to large trucks on I-25 or local highways in Colorado, and don’t realize how serious it is to share the road with a heavy truck that is traveling over 65 mph.  According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 548 people died from traffic accidents statewide and 56 of those fatalities involved a tractor-trailer in 2008.

Truck drivers are not always to blame when large trucks and passenger vehicles collide. However, because of the truck’s weight and power, more damage is caused to the driver and passengers of the vehicle.  The Department of Transportation has set standards for trucks not to exceed 102 inches wide, 13.5 feet high, and cannot weigh more than 80,000 pounds gross weight.

Even with those regulations, a speeding semi loaded with cargo can be deadly. Since 1992 commercial trucks have been manufactured with electronic speed governors; however, the law does not require the instrument to be engaged. Speed governors would regulate the maximum speed a trucker could drive his semi.

Many activists believe speed governors would make our roads a safer place to drive, which is why there is a huge push and petition requesting the U.S. Department of Transportation to enforce the speed of large trucks to 65 mph or slower. According to Road Safe America, slower truck speeds will help lessen the number of truck accidents and make the roads a safer place to drive.
