How to avoid a dog bite

Colorado dog bites can be very traumatic and may cause pain, suffering, scaring, nerve damage, emotional trauma, and other serious injuries. Dog bites happen more frequently than people realize. In fact, there are approximately 4.5 million people who suffer from dog bites each year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 60% of the victims who are bit by dogs each year are children. In fact, dog bites are the second common cause for kids taking a trip to the emergency room.

According to the Pet Food Institute, there is an estimated 75 million dogs living in the United States, and since the majority of dog bite victims are children, it is beneficial to teach kids how to avoid a dog bite. Some tips include:
Do not disturb a dog while it is sleeping, eating, or chewing on a bone or toy

Do not pet a strange dog unless the dog can sniff you or see you

If a dog comes near you, stay still and let the dog sniff you

Do not turn your back, scream or run away from a dog

Avoid direct eye contact with a dog

Never approach a stray dog

According to a study by the CDC regarding dog bite fatalities from 2006 to 2008, Pit Bulls were responsible for approximately 60% of deaths. Other dog breeds that are dangerous include: Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Perro do Presa Canarios, Chow-Chows, Akitas, and Wolf-Dog mixes.

Unfortunately, the CDC says that one in five victims who are bitten need medical care for their injuries. In 2006, over 31,000 people had reconstructive surgery after suffering dog bites. Sadly, these serious dog bites can lead to nerve damage and facial scars, and may require the work of a plastic surgeon.

If you are a victim of a Colorado dog bite, you need to do your best to identify the dog, get the name of the dog's owner, obtain the names and phone numbers of any witnesses, and take pictures of your wounds. It is in your best interest to seek medical attention and to consult an experienced Colorado injury lawyer for a free legal evaluation.

You may be entitled to compensation for your pain, medical bills, and emotional distress. Contact the Law Offices of Robert J. Anderson at (866) 254-1274 for help with your dog bite claim.
