Is texting while driving a big truck insane?

We all feel we shouldn't do it. Like driving at 110 mph or getting behind the wheel after a few margaritas. But it is only recently that federal and state bans on driving while texting have been implemented, the Colorado ban has only been in effect since December 2009. There is a very good reason for banning reading, typing, and sending text messages while driving: you can't do it without taking your eyes off the road. A recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute has shown that while texting over a six-second period, the driver's eyes are away from the road for 4.6 seconds. This is equivalent to crossing the length of a football field at 55 mph with your eyes shut!

The study concludes that the crash risk posed by driving while texting is twenty-three times higher than for a non-distracted driver. So, yes, texting should be banned. Assessing the offense is not as difficult as you might think, or at least no more so than assessing DUI. The Colorado law makes driving while texting a primary offense, meaning the officer can stop a driver if he thinks he is texting, and the driver's cell phone will indicate the exact time a message was sent or received.

Colorado victims of accidents distracted driving certainly hope for an increased awareness of the terrible consequences of driving while texting.
