When you drive, some distractions are far worse than others

Driver inattention is worst when the driver has 1) his eyes off the road, 2) his hands off the wheel and 3) his mind focusing elsewhere. According to the US Government web site on distracted driving, these most dangerous sources of distraction cause the worst crashes because it takes so much time to bring the driver's eyes, hands, and mind back to driving. The mind is the key: when you read an e-mail, you don't count the seconds that your eyes are off the road,; you just go from one line to the next and don't realize the growing danger.

Drinking your coffee and talking on the phone are not as dangerous, as in the first case your mind can focus on the driving, and in the second, one hand is on the wheel and your eyes are on the road. But these examples also show how relative these risks are. It may be OK to drink coffee or talk on the phone on a straight, low-traffic highway, but it is not the same on the Denver Mousetrap Interchange. Drinking very hot coffee is no problem until you spill some on your bare knees. Talking on the phone is OK until the discussion heats up, tempers rise, and a red light is crossed while you are exchanging nasty epithets.
