Cycling is addictive. The more you do it, the more you need it. You get used to the effort while raising your level of physical condition and well-being. The only problem is that there are not enough safe bicycle paths in Colorado Springs, Denver and other urban areas offering protection from traffic and reducing the risks of death or serious injuries.

How do cyclists avoid getting hit by other vehicles?
You can actually do a lot to lower the risks of a bicycle crash:
Make sure others will see you: use a reflective jacket, reflective tape to mark your bicycle and get yourself front and rear lights, especially the bright LED types that last much longer. Never ride a bicycle at night without lights.
Make sure others hear you: avoid pedestrians and other cyclists who are inattentive or can't see you coming with a bell or horn. If they can't hear you, yell!
Make sure you hear the others: riding with headphones and loud music is dangerous. You cut yourself off from the sound of approaching danger.
Don't ride close to the curb: ride more to the left, towards the middle of the lane. This gives you a better vision of side streets at intersections, protects you from suddenly opening car doors and prevents vehicles from squeezing you when turning right in front of you.
Slow down or stop: each time you suspect an approaching vehicle doesn't see you, from the rear on rural roads or at intersections, move to the side, slow down, or step out of the way.
Don't make a left turn without looking behind: when you signal your left turn with an outstretched arm, do not assume this is enough. Always look behind you before changing lanes and turning left. Get yourself a mirror, to place on the handlebars or on your helmet.
Choose your itinerary: use back streets, wider roadways, and lower traffic highways. Don't just hop on your bicycle and ride, prepare your itinerary carefully to make your ride enjoyable.
Obey traffic regulations: don't cross red lights, or ride on sidewalks. Don't drink and ride. Don't ride against the traffic flow.
Wear a helmet: even for short rides, make it a habit of always wearing a helmet. Be a role model for your kids and teach them what you've learned.
