The economic cost of traffic accidents reaches one hundred billion dollars.

How is this staggering amount distributed among road-users?

71% of all costs relate to car and light truck accidents, 13% to motorcyclists, 10% to pedestrians and 5% to cyclists;
70% of the fatalities were men, who also account for 52% of the injured victims. But the overall cost of accidents involving men is 74% of the total;
Teens and young adults account for 28% of the fatal and non-fatal injuries and 31% of the costs, whereas they represent only 14% of the population;
The number of motorcyclist victims of traffic accidents is 6%, but the cost of their fatal and non-fatal injuries accounts for twice as much (12%), probably due to the severity of the injuries. The same can be noticed for pedestrians and bicyclists.
