The economic cost of traffic accidents reaches one hundred billion dollars.

Colorado victims and their loved ones know the terrible cost of a car, motorcycle or truck accident. If they can get financial compensation, no monetary amount will make them forget their grief, pain and suffering, as attorney Robert J. Anderson knows, having helped countless traffic accident victims in El Paso, Douglas and Denver counties.

But the country as a whole also suffers economically from the cost of vehicle crashes that has now reached astronomical proportions..

Country-wide and over a period of one year the combined cost of medical care and productivity loss of traffic accidents exceeds $99 billion, according to a study by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Direct medical expenses account for a sizeable part ($17 billion) but the bulk of the cost is due to productivity loss ($82 billion).

There are many debatable ways to measure productivity loss, but the consensus is that its cost is underestimated. Administrative costs, such as police and emergency service intervention, insurance expenses and personal expenses are generally taken into account. The other major component of productivity loss is the loss of income due to medical treatment, disability or death. Property damage, other than covered by insurance contracts, is not considered in the calculations.

How is this staggering amount distributed among road-users?

  • 71% of all costs relate to car and light truck accidents, 13% to motorcyclists, 10% to pedestrians and 5% to cyclists;
  • 70% of the fatalities were men, who also account for 52% of the injured victims. But the overall cost of accidents involving men is 74% of the total;
  • Teens and young adults account for 28% of the fatal and non-fatal injuries and 31% of the costs, whereas they represent only 14% of the population;
  • The number of motorcyclist victims of traffic accidents is 6%, but the cost of their fatal and non-fatal injuries accounts for twice as much (12%), probably due to the severity of the injuries. The same can be noticed for pedestrians and bicyclists.
